Their next steps were decided. The agents drove back to the company where they’d initially planned to speak to Haverty and Clayton Lewis.

Mallory’s phone rang, and he answered the call from the back seat. “Mallory here.”

Kate glanced into the rearview mirror while he took the call.

“Okay. Meet us there. We’re just about there now. See you soon. Bye.” He ended the call and caught Kate’s eyes in the rearview again. “That was Officer Enapay. He says everyone’s still pounding the pavement in the search for Sophie. The sheriff’s deputies included. I texted him with the results from the lab, and he let Swiftwater in on it. Long story short, Swiftwater wants Enapay with us since it’s looking increasingly like we’re dealing with someone from the company. He’s meeting us there.”

“We need to talk to him about the gas station anyway,” Surrey added.

“I don’t want to wait for him, and we’re here now.” Kate pulled into the parking lot. “For the sake of time, we should get started, and he can catch up.” She peered over her shoulder at Haverty. “You’ll get us in. We’ll talk to Lewis. And we’ll confirm that the material is here onsite. Depending on how this shakes out, we’ll get ourselves a warrant.” Kate cut the engine and stepped out of the car.

The others filed out and joined her at the entrance.

Haverty used his keycard to gain entry. “There will still be a lot of people here. If you think we’ll all go in there and not draw attention, you might want to reconsider.” He continued inside and waved to the man behind the front counter. He thumbed back. “These guys are FBI. They’re here about the incident.”

It seemed everyone knew what the “incident” was as the man nodded.

Haverty proceeded to the door marked “Employees Only” and carried on inside.

With masonry walls and concrete floors, the place appeared like an oversized car mechanic’s shop. The air had a hint of oil and metal to it, and in the distance, machines hummed behind heavy closed doors.

“Why don’t you guys wait here?” Haverty opened a door to a meeting room with a table and several chairs inside. “I’ll bring in Lewis.” He looked down a moment. “He didn’t do this. I know he didn’t.”

Kate entered the plain room void of artwork or even a monitor on the wall. Just an oblong oak table with eight rolling chairs and a speaker phone in the center. She took a seat, and Surrey pulled out the chair next to her.

Mallory checked his phone as he walked inside. “That’s Ronnie. He’s here. I’ll go get him.”

When the door closed, Kate began, “We need Haverty to give us access to the servers for their closed circuit cameras. There must be a backup of that night on one of them.”

“You heard what he said,” Surrey replied. “He deleted the file. Besides, we have our shot with Lewis now. That was the entire goal up to this point. We might not need to jump through any more hoops after this,” Surrey replied.
